Outdoor and Survival

As Chief Seattle said, “The Earth does not belong to Man, Man belongs to the Earth” meaning that really, everything but nature is impermanent, so you’d better know how to live without modern items.

Plus, getting out of our glass-and-concrete cocoons every now and then is very relaxing - if you know what you’re doing.

CAMPING

I’m assuming that you are a little more adventurous than the typical state-forest RV camper type, so info here is presented towards people already familiar with the basics.

Gear

We might as well start with this because this is a make-or-break item. Nothing will increase your enjoyment of the outdoors more than having the right gear at the right time. Conversely, your trip can be a living nightmare by a lack of necessary gear.

I subscribe to an “almost worst case” scenario when planning. For a typical long-weekend trip, my minimum gear is:

  • Tent
  • Sleeping bag
  • Cook kit
  • Every imaginable lightweight source of fire, including matches, lighters, flint/steel, magnesium, steel wool, firestarters, and usually some paper
  • Water purifier
  • Trash bags
